Introduction to Game Development with Unreal Engineering

The UA Little Rock Association for Computing Machinery student chapter will host a game development workshop for teachers, high school juniors and seniors, and adults from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at the College of Engineering and Information Technology building room 217.

The workshop will introduce learners to the fundamentals of game development using the game engine Unreal Engine 4 and and its visual scripting system. No prior experience is necessary. The cost is $75 for teachers and adults and $40 for students. Teachers will earn six professional development credits. Participants will need to bring their own laptops.

“While the workshop will be teaching programming, it may also be relevant to students interested in game design in general, since it will provide students with a starting point to work from for exploring other aspects of game design,” said Sandra Leiterman, math education specialist with the STEM Education Center. “By the end of the event, participants will have their own playable game.”

About this Event

Warren A. Stephens, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stephens Inc., is a graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he received his BA in economics. He later received his MBA from Wake Forest University.

He began his investment banking career as an associate in the Corporate Finance Department at Stephens Inc. Later, he was Senior Vice President of the Capital Markets Group and was named President and Chief Executive Officer in 1986. In addition to his management responsibilities associated with Stephens Inc., he served on the NASD District Conduct Committee for three years finishing as its chairman. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Dillard’s Inc. and is a former member of the Board of Trustees at Washington and Lee University and was co-chair of the successful Capital Campaign that concluded in June, 2015.

Active in community and civic affairs, he is a past chairman of the board of the Arkansas Arts Center and is currently a member of the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Board, as well as a former chairman. He is Chair of Episcopal Collegiate School Foundation Board and he served as chairman of the Capital Campaign to renovate the current theatre for the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. He also is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Central Arkansas Boys and Girls Club.

Born on February 18, 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas, he and his wife, Harriet C. Stephens, have three children, Miles Stephens, John Stephens and Laura Stephens.

JOLT Cyber Challenge is a weekend-long cyber security awareness competition. Challenges are arranged Jeopardy style, divided by category with puzzles of increasing difficulty within those categories. Our teams leverage advanced open source technology and use the tools that power some of the most complex real time solutions in the world.

Tinkering, a popular activity that is a key component of the nationwide “Maker Movement,” takes place every day in the Museum of Discovery’s Tinkering Studio. Once a year at Tinkerfest, tinkering takes over the entire museum and neighboring streets for a day-long event with more than 40 hands-on, interactive activities. The Patent Bootcamp for Women and Minorities in STEM — a one-day primer on the basics of patent law and the patent application process — will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the E.J. Ball Courtroom at the University of Arkansas School of Law. 

"We are bringing in experts from across the country to discuss the patenting gaps in the United States, address the challenges to protecting innovation, and provide training on the steps and strategies to successfully protect one's invention," said Uché Ewelukwa Ofodile, E.J. Ball Professor of Law at the University of Arkansas. "The 2019 Bootcamp faculty will provide training about the U.S. patent system and the patenting process and consider efforts to overcome the gender and race gap in the patent system."

The event is intended to shed light on the acute "innovation gap" and patenting gap in Arkansas, equip women and minorities in STEM with basic knowledge of U.S. patent law, guide participants through the patent application process, encourage participants to proactively protect their rights and empower participants with tools that they need to guard their innovation against theft and exploitation.
